CRUSADERS. Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Imitation Bezants, 12th century. Bezant (Gold, 22 mm, 3.94 g, 11 h), imitating a Fatimid dinar of al-Amir Abu ʿAli al-Mansur (AH 495-524 / AD 1101-1130). Central inscription, ‘ʿāl / ghāya’ (‘Extremely high [quality]’ in Arabic); inner margin, ‘lā ilāha illā Allāh Muḥammad rasūl Allāh ʿAlī w[alī Allāh]’ (‘There is no deity but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. Ali is the friend of Allah’ in deteriorated Arabic); outer margin, ‘Muḥammad rasūl Allāh arsalahū bi al-hudā wa dīn al-ḥaqq liyuẓhirahū ʿalā al[-dīn kullih]’ (‘Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He may make it overcome all religions’ in deteriorated Arabic). Rev. Central inscription, ‘al-imām / al-Manṣūr’ (‘Imam al-Mansur’ in Arabic); continuation of the title in the inner margin, ‘Abū ʿAlī al-ʾĀmir bi-Aḥkām Allāh amīr al-muʾminīn’ (‘Abu ʿAlī, al-ʾAmir bi-Ahkam Allah [= He who commands Allah’s decrees], Commander of the Believers’ in deteriorated Arabic); outer margin, ‘bism Allāh al-raḥmān al-raḥīm ḍuriba hādhā al-dīnār bi Miṣr’ (‘In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. This dinar was struck in Misr’ in deteriorated Arabic). Album 730. Perfectly centered and unusually attractive. Minor scrape on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
